The One Thing You Could Stop Doing Today

Today is about taking one thing away.

By James Parker

Most advice about a calmer life is about adding something: a routine, a habit, a new app. Today is about subtracting one thing instead.

Pick one, not everything

Think about the last few days. Was there one small habit that left you more frazzled than it was worth? Checking the news first thing. Saying yes to one more thing on an already full day. Keeping a browser tab open that quietly needles you every time you glance at it.

You are not being asked to overhaul your life. Choose one thing. Just one.

Stop it on purpose

Decide, specifically, what stopping looks like. Close the tab and do not reopen it. Leave the phone in another room for the first twenty minutes of the morning. Say no to the one request that always arrives at the worst time.

Notice what you feel when you do not do it. Sometimes it is relief. Sometimes it is a strange itch to pick the habit back up, which tells you something about how automatic it had become.

Clarity through subtraction

A calmer day does not always come from doing more things well. Sometimes it comes from removing the one thing that was quietly costing you energy. That is clarity in its plainest form: seeing what is actually worth your attention, and letting the rest go.

You do not need to decide today whether the habit is gone for good. You only need to notice what one day without it felt like.
